Thoroughly Reading the “Overseas Travel Risk Management Guidebook”

- Please read the “Overseas Travel Risk Management Guidebook” and make any necessary preparation to minimize risk from a “health” and “safety” aspect so that you may participate in your study or research without any hindrance. (Have health and dental check-ups, prepare first-aid medications, receive inoculations (vaccinations) as necessary, obtain beforehand relevant information about the country you are travelling to, prepare emergency contact lists etc.)

- You can make use of this card as an emergency contact list.

Purchasing Insurance

- When traveling abroad, be sure to purchase travel insurance or study abroad insurance that covers the period from the day you leave your home in Japan until the day you return. Please note that Japanese overseas travel insurance, study abroad insurance etc. cannot be purchased after leaving Japan. Also, if you are asked to take out the insurance designated by the host university, please purchase it as well.

- It is important to prepare for potential high-cost payouts by ensuring coverage amounts are at least 50 million yen for medical and rescue expenses, and at least 100 million yen for personal liability. While credit cards may include travel insurance, the coverage conditions are often insufficient in most cases. For details, please check the aforementioned “Overseas Travel Risk Management Guidebook”.

- Enrolling in the “Futai Kaigaku” is one of the necessary conditions for participating in some study abroad programs. (This rule is applicable to programs offered by the Center for Global Education) . (The expenses required for the insurance are to be borne by students themselves.)

Some College, Faculty, or Graduate School have made its purchase mandatory, so please check and follow the instructions of your affiliated College, Faculty, or Graduate School . For programs managed by the Center for Global Education, it is mandatory to enroll in OSSMA for the entire duration of your stay abroad, including any personal travel before or after the program period. (The cost of the insurance is to be borne by students themselves.)

Registration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs「たびれじ」("Tabi-Regi")

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has introduced a "Tabi Regi" system in July 2014 (for Japanese citizens). By entering the required information (itinerary, travel destination and contact details) into the Ministry's dedicated website, you can receive up-to-date information on your travel destination and email notifications of any arising emergency events as well as be contacted in cases of emergency, etc. We highly recommend that outbound students and researchers register with the system.
